Carya aquatica

Water Hickory

Description

Native shade tree. An excellent specimen in the Southeast. The Water Hickory is commonly found in tough environments, including swamps and lowlands. When young, trees have a rather full head, becoming more vase-shaped with age. While fall color is not as vibrant as other species of hickory, color persists for an extended period of time. This species has dark green, narrow leaflets. Its bark is light brown and splits into plate-like scales.
